AI literacy is the ability to understand, interrogate and responsibly direct intelligent systems—not merely obtain fluent answers from them.

The danger of confusing fluency with truth

AI systems can produce confident language without dependable reasoning or current evidence. In a classroom, that creates a new educational responsibility. Learners must understand that a polished response is a proposal to examine, not a fact to accept.

Schools should avoid two extremes: banning AI as though it will disappear, or adopting it as though convenience guarantees learning. The better path is structured use with clear purpose, age-appropriate safeguards and visible human accountability.

Capability 1: Frame the problem

The quality of an AI-assisted outcome begins before the prompt. Learners must identify the audience, goal, constraints and evidence required. If the problem is poorly framed, faster generation simply produces confusion at greater speed.

Capability 2: Verify claims and sources

Learners should separate claims, locate authoritative sources, compare dates and identify uncertainty. Verification must become a routine rather than a special response to suspected errors. A useful classroom rule is simple: the higher the consequence, the stronger the evidence required.

Capability 3: Recognise bias and missing context

AI reflects patterns in data and decisions made by people. It may underrepresent African languages, local practices or experiences that are poorly documented online. Learners should ask whose perspective is present, whose is absent and what local knowledge is needed before acting.

Capabilities 4 and 5: Protect people and preserve authorship

Students need explicit guidance on personal data, images, passwords, consent and intellectual property. They also need to remain authors of their work. Responsible use means documenting assistance, challenging outputs and being able to explain the final decisions without hiding behind the tool.
